Kualanamu International Airport

Kualanamu International Airport (English: Kualanamu International Airport) (IATA: KNO, ICAO: WIMM) is an International Airport serving the city of Medan, North Sumatra. This airport is located in Deli Serdang Regency, 26 km east of the city center of Medan. This airport is the third largest airport in Indonesia (after Soekarno-Hatta Jakarta and the new Kertajati in Majalengka West Java. The location of this airport is a former plantation area of ​​PT Perkebunan Nusantara II Tanjung Morawa located in Beringin, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. Construction of this airport is part of MP3EI, to replace Polonia International Airport, which is more than 85 years old, Kualanamu Airport is expected to become an international transit base airport for Sumatra and its surroundings.The airport has been operating since July 25, 2013 even though there are facilities that have not been fully completed .

The transfer of the airport to Kualanamu has been planned since 1992. During a working visit to Medan by the then Minister of Transportation, Azwar Anas, said that for the sake of aviation safety, the airport would be moved outside the city. Construction preparations began on August 1, 1997, but the monetary crisis which began in the same year forced the development plan to be postponed. Since then news of the airport has rarely been heard, until the Mandala Airlines plane crash occurred on September 5, 2005. This accident killed the Governor of North Sumatra Tengku Rizal Nurdin and also caused some residents living around the airport area to die due to the airport being too close to settlement. This led to the re-emergence of calls for the airport in Medan to be immediately moved to a more suitable place. In addition, Polonia's capacity which has exceeded its limit is also one of the factors for the planned airport transfer.

Development plans over the years have been hampered by land acquisition problems. On July 1, 2006, there were only 1,650 hectares of land that had not been troubled, while land occupied by 71 other families was still being negotiated. On November 1, 2006 it was reported that Angkasa Pura II had completed all land acquisition. On November 1, 2011, the airport was 70% completed and planned to be completed 100% by the end of 2012 which included non-toll roads, railway lines & toll roads which will be built thereafter.

At the beginning of 2013, the development had reached 95%. On January 10, 2013, the airport conducted a navigation and technical system experiment. The airport was opened on July 25, 2013. On March 27, 2014, the airport was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in conjunction with the inauguration of the construction of several airports on the island of Sumatra.

Phase I of the airport can accommodate 8.1 million passengers and 10,000 aircraft movements per year, while after the completion of phase II the airport is planned to accommodate 25 million passengers per year. The area of ​​the passenger terminal to be built is around 6.5 hectares with a 3.5 hectare commercial area & 1.3 hectares of cargo facilities. Kualanamu International Airport has a runway length of 3.75 km which is suitable for landing planes the size of a Boeing 777 & has 8 garbarata. Even though the facilities have not been installed, the airport is capable of being occupied by Airbus A380 passenger aircraft, Antonov An-225, and Boeing 747-8. This airport is also the fourth airport in Indonesia that can accommodate Airbus A380s besides Surabaya, Jakarta and Batam.
