PT Angkasa Pura II manages 20 major airports in Indonesia.
Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport (IATA: PKU, ICAO: WIBB) is an airport located in the city of Pekanbaru and previously named the Simpang Tiga Airport. This airport has an area of 321.21 ha. In order to welcome PON XVII in 2012, the airport was expanded so that later it could accommodate larger aircraft. The airport is also a home base for the 12th Air Force Squadron of the Indonesian Air Force. The name of the airport is taken from the name of Sultan Syarif Kasim II, an Indonesian National hero from Riau.
Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport (SSK. II) Pekanbaru is an historical heritage airport from the time of independence against Dutch and Japanese invaders. At that time it was called the "Air Base" where the runway still consisted of land that was hardened and used as a Military Base. Initially the runway was from East to West with runway numbers 14 and 32. At the beginning of independence a new runway was built which stretched from north to south with runway numbers 18 and 36. The runway length was approximately 800 meters with a runway surface in the form of gravel tighten up. In 1950 the runway was extended to 1,500 meters, and in 1967 the runway began the asphalt process of Runway, Taxi, and Apron with a thickness of 7 cm and an additional length of runway of 500 meters.
In 1960 the Government operated this airport as a Pioneer airport and changed the name of the Airport to "Simpang Tiga Airport". The name Simpang Tiga is taken because the location is three intersection roads, namely the road to Pekanbaru City, Kampar Regency and Indragiri Hulu Regency. Based on the Meeting of the Head of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Transportation on 23 August 1985 the name Simpang Tiga Airport was changed to Simpang Tiga Airport starting 1 September 1985.
On April 1, 1994 Simpang Tiga Airport joined the Management in the school by PT. Angkasa Pura II (Persero) and referred to as Simpang Tiga Airport Branch Office, which later changed its name to Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport which was determined by a Presidential Decree No. Kep. 473 / OM.00 / 1988-AP II dated 4 April 1998 and inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid on 29 April 2000.
In 2009, Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport began the expansion of Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport by Angkasa Pura II in collaboration with the Riau provincial government. This expansion is planned to be completed by the end of 2011 and built as preparation for the National Sports Week (PON) which will be held in 2012. This expansion is done because it is considered no longer able to accommodate the number of passengers by using Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport which increases every year. .
