Angkasa Pura II Boosts Cargo Transportation in the Middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic

26 Apr 2020

kumparan.com - PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) is aiming at the airport cargo management business as one of the company's main sources of revenue amid the decline in airline and passenger traffic.

PT Angkasa Pura II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said a number of airlines had proposed extra flights for cargo flights at a number of the company's airports. This is in line with the efforts of a number of airlines that are now shifting their focus to cargo service, which is a ban on aircraft passenger services amid the corona virus pandemic.

The airline chose to maximize aircraft utilization by transporting cargo in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, a number of helicopter service operators began operating to transport cargo.

"Maybe if the cargo can be loaded in the aircraft cabin then it will speed up loading and unloading compared to if the cargo is loaded in the belly of the aircraft. That makes the entire loading and unloading process faster, "he explained in a written statement as quoted by the council, Sunday (4/26).

Airports under the management of PT Angkasa Pura II which serve cargo flights include Soekarno-Hatta (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma (Jakarta), Sultan Syarif Kasim II (Pekanbaru), Supadio (Pontianak), Husein Sastranegara (Bandung), and Kualanamu (Deli) Serdang).

"The type of cargo currently being transported is for example e-commerce shipments, various important equipment and equipment in the middle of a pandemic, medical devices and so on," he said.

During the first quarter of 2020, the volume of cargo transportation at 19 airports of PT Angkasa Pura II recorded an average of around 62,000 tons per month. As for Soekarno-Hatta itself, the average cargo volume reaches 42,500 tons per month.
