Digital Transformation Enters a New Stage, AP II Prepares Airport Metaverse to Support Airport Operations and Services

01 Feb 2022

Jakarta - PT Angkasa Pura II, the operator of 20 airports in Indonesia, is entering a new phase in carrying out digital transformation which has been started since 2016.

AP II is currently implementing the DROID (Digitally Ready for Operational and Infostructure Development) model to support operations and services at all airports managed by the company.

The implementation of the DROID Model is realized through the use of three mobile platforms, namely the travelin application for services to the community (Customer Experience/CX), then the iPerform application for airport operations (Operational Excellent/OX) and Pocket Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM) as applications to strengthen collaboration between airport stakeholders (Ecosystem Exploration/EX).

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said that in 2022 the company will strengthen digital transformation through the concept of New Experience through (X) Technology Airport 4.0 (NEXT Airport 4.0) in order to bring AP II airports to always keep abreast of developments and adopt the latest technology (advance technology).

"Through NEXT Airport 4.0, we adopted the metaverse to introduce the Airport Metaverse which strengthens the application of the DROID Model to improve Operational Excellence, Customer Experience and Ecosystem Exploration," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Metaverse itself can briefly be explained as a synergy between the ecosystem (digital world) and supporting technology, one of which is extended reality technology such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mix Reality (MR).

Through the metaverse, everyone who is not physically in the same room can connect directly in the digital world to meet each other, work, communicate, socialize, collaborate, and so on.

Internally, AP II has also taken advantage of the metaverse in the Quarter I/2022 Leadership Meeting which was held on January 31, 2022, where the board of directors met and communicated with each other in the digital world.

Airport Metaverse
Muhammad Awaluddin said AP II would develop Airport Metaverse, which is useful to support the company's airports.

"AP II will develop the Airport Metaverse, so of course this metaverse is used for airport interests, from operations, services, to commercial," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

In the initial stage, AP II will develop 3 programs that utilize the metaverse, namely:

- Airport Metaverse Learning
AP II develops training modules and methods to support airport operational reliability. Utilizing the metaverse, training can be carried out quickly and simultaneously in one place (the digital world) with a large number of teams from various airports.
The training to utilize this metaverse is more optimal in making standard operating procedures (SOPs) run by airport staff to be maintained at all AP II airports. In addition, the solidity of the team at all AP II airports can be strengthened because the training is carried out together more often.

“Staff at 20 airports can directly participate in the training together through Airport Metaverse Learning. This is certainly an excellent breakthrough and innovation in optimizing the training program," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

- Tourism Activity Center
Utilizing the metaverse, the wider community from various locations can know and feel the experience of all services and facilities available at AP II airports. In addition, users can also get to know and feel the experience of visiting various tourist destinations in an area where there is an AP II airport.
Through the metaverse, users can interact with each other, including communicating directly with AP II staff.

- Augmented Airport Experience
AP II has developed an Augmented Airport Experience that can be used by airport visitors or airplane passengers as a navigation tool via gadgets to get to various locations at the airport, for example: boarding lounges, restaurants or certain tenants.

"This technology helps airport visitors or airplane passengers to be able to more accurately predict the time needed to carry out various activities at AP II airport," explained Muhammad Awaluddin.

In the future, the Airport Metaverse program launched by AP II will also be encouraged to involve various stakeholders, including airlines and commercial business partners at the airport.

Muhammad Awaluddin said that through the collaboration of various stakeholders, the Airport Metaverse ecosystem would be realized at AP II airports.

"Airport Metaverse is a form of adaptation of AP II to ensure the Airport Hospitality Experience is maintained and improved in the midst of global developments," said Muhammad Awaluddin.
