Jakarta - The domestic cargo market at PT Angkasa Pura II airport continues to be enthusiastic despite facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout 2020 - 2022, the volume of domestic cargo transportation at AP II airports will continue to soar.

In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the cumulative volume of domestic cargo transportation at AP II's 20 airports was recorded at 427,948 tons, an increase of 5.27% compared to 2019 when normal conditions had not had a pandemic of 406,494 tons.

Then in 2021 the volume of domestic cargo transportation was 546,237 tons, an increase of 27.64% compared to 2020.

Meanwhile, during January - October 2022 the volume of domestic cargo reached 461,102 tons, up 2.91% compared to January - October 2021.

The volume of domestic cargo transport in January - October 2022 has also exceeded the full year realization in 2019 and 2020.

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said the increase in cargo volume was in line with the growing e-commerce business in the country.

"Through close coordination with various stakeholders, AP II airports are able to accommodate the growing demand for domestic cargo transportation amidst the great challenges of the pandemic."

"The increase in the volume of domestic cargo transportation at the same time proves that the domestic market is very supportive of the recovery of the national aviation sector. Meanwhile, international cargo is still limited because new airlines this year have started to regularly open flights to and from abroad," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

As for the types of goods in domestic cargo transportation at AP II airports, they are in the form of general cargo, which is a type of shipment without the need for special handling but must still meet flight security and safety requirements.

"The majority of general cargo, and most of the garments, household appliances, office equipment, sports equipment and so on. This is in line with the e-commerce business that has grown during the pandemic," said Muhammad Awaluddin.

Based on the Financial Stability Study book released by Bank Indonesia, during Semester I/2022 e-commerce transactions increased in nominal terms by 22.1% (yoy) to reach IDR 227.8 trillion and in terms of volume increased by 39.9% (yoy) to reach 1.74 million transactions.

In encouraging cargo growth, AP II ensures the availability of cargo services, management of logistics services and the provision of an integrated logistics system through PT Angkasa Pura Kargo (APK) at airports managed by AP II.

Main Director of APK Gautsil Madani said that currently APK has also operated a special cargo aircraft (freighter).

"The Angkasa Pura Cargo freighter began operating on September 22, 2022 to serve domestic cargo requests, to be precise for the Jakarta - Balikpapan - Jakarta route and has a capacity of 15 tons. In the future, this freighter will serve other domestic routes," said Gautsil Madani.

Meanwhile, AP II is currently planning to build a cargo village at Soekarno-Hatta Airport with a focus, among other things, on serving cargo shipments from e-commerce. The existence of a cargo village also signifies the transformation of cargo services in Indonesia which has contributed to increasing the competitiveness of Soekarno-Hatta Airport at the regional and global levels.
